Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida, has earned a widespread reputation as one of the finest beaches in the world, recognized by multiple national and international ranking organizations for the extraordinary quality of its sand and water. The beach occupies the western shore of Siesta Key, a barrier island connected to Sarasota by two drawbridges, with the main public beach access at the north end providing a 40-acre park with ample parking, a pavilion, concessions, and beach volleyball courts. The sand at Siesta Key is composed almost entirely of pure white quartz crystal — an unusual geological characteristic that gives the beach its defining qualities. Quartz sand reflects heat rather than absorbing it, making the surface cool underfoot even at midday in midsummer, a property immediately apparent to first-time visitors. The Gulf water off Siesta Key is exceptionally calm, shallow, and clear, with a gradual slope making it safe for children and excellent for shelling. The beach stretches approximately eight miles along the island's western shore, though the main public beach occupies the northern two miles.
