Salvador Dali Museum

The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, houses the largest collection of Dali's works outside of Europe and presents them within a remarkable purpose-built building opened in 2011 on the waterfront of Tampa Bay. The museum's exterior is defined by a dramatic geodesic glass bubble — the Enigma — that creates a visually striking landmark and frames the building's main entrance in a surrealist architectural gesture entirely appropriate to its contents. The permanent collection encompasses 96 oil paintings representing all periods of Dali's career from his academic training through the Surrealist period to the later Nuclear Mysticism works, supplemented by over 100 watercolors and drawings, thousands of prints and photographs, and an extensive archive of documentary materials. The collection was assembled by A. Reynolds and Eleanor Morse, lifelong friends and patrons of Dali who collected his work systematically from 1943 onward and ultimately donated the entire collection to St. Petersburg. The gallery sequence is organized chronologically to trace the evolution of Dali's technique and preoccupations — from the early realistic landscapes influenced by Velázquez and Vermeer through the melting clocks of the Surrealist period to the monumental canvases of his religious and scientific synthesis phase. The Hallucinogenic Toreador, a massive painting over 15 feet tall, is the museum's most celebrated single work, containing hidden images of a toreador emerging from a pattern of Venus de Milo figures — a canvas that rewards extended contemplation. Free audio guides are included with admission and significantly deepen appreciation of individual works. The museum's gift shop is one of the finest art museum shops in Florida, stocking extensive Dali reproductions, prints, and surrealist-inspired objects.
