Washington is the capital of the United States, a planned city of 68 square miles on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia. It holds the three branches of the federal government, the Smithsonian museums (free to enter), the National Mall monuments and a wide range of neighborhoods, and receives more than 20 million visitors a year.
Washington, D.C. nightlife centers on live music. The U Street Corridor holds the 9:30 Club, Black Cat and the Howard Theatre; Georgetown has the Blues Alley jazz supper club; The Wharf adds The Anthem; Adams Morgan has the 18th Street bar strip; and Capitol Hill has long-running neighborhood pubs. Several well-known clubs closed for good, including U Street Music Hall (2020) and Eighteenth Street Lounge (closed after the pandemic).
Neighborhoods are walkable once inside them. U Street-Cardozo Metro serves the music corridor; Adams Morgan is about a 15-minute walk from Dupont Circle or Woodley Park Metro; Georgetown has no Metro station, so use a Metrobus along M St or Wisconsin Ave, a rideshare or walk from Foggy Bottom-GWU; Capitol Hill is next to Eastern Market and Capitol South Metro.
