Macedonia Brook State Park Loop

Macedonia Brook State Park in Kent, Connecticut, offers one of the most rugged and satisfying day loops in the Litchfield Hills of northwestern Connecticut. The park entrance and main parking area are at 159 Macedonia Brook Road off Route 341; day hiking is free and no permit is required. The main loop of approximately 6 miles combines the orange-blazed Macedonia Ridge Trail with sections of the blue-blazed Connecticut Forest and Park Association trail system, ascending to a ridge at 1,380 feet — one of the higher non-summit ridges accessible on a single-day loop in the state. Total elevation gain is around 600 feet, concentrated in two extended uphill stretches through mixed hardwood and hemlock forest. The trail surface alternates between rocky woodland path, exposed quartzite ledge on the upper ridge, and stream-corridor sections near Macedonia Brook in the valley below. Muddy conditions in early spring can make the descent along the brook slippery; May or later is generally preferable. From the ridge, views open west into New York State across the Catskill foothills on clear days, making this one of the rare Connecticut hikes offering an out-of-state panorama. Macedonia Brook itself runs through the lower section of the loop; the water is clear but requires treatment before drinking. The state park also operates campsites managed by Connecticut State Parks, permitting overnight stays for those wishing to combine two days of hiking. Trekking poles are particularly helpful on the rocky descent back to the valley. The loop is best suited to confident intermediate hikers comfortable on uneven terrain; the combination of distance, elevation, and rough surface makes it unsuitable for young children or beginners.

Highlights

  • Ridge at 1,380 feet with westward views into New York State across the Catskill foothills
  • Remote 6-mile loop through mixed hardwood and hemlock forest with minimal foot traffic
  • Macedonia Brook running through the valley below — scenic forested stream corridor
  • State park campsite available for overnight stays and multi-day exploration
  • Part of the Litchfield Hills trail network with connections to additional routes in Litchfield County

Tips for visiting

  • Avoid March and April when the brook-side descent sections are deeply muddy after snowmelt
  • Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the long, rocky ridge descent back to the valley
  • Carry 2 or more liters of water; Macedonia Brook requires treatment before drinking
  • Download a trail map before arriving — cell coverage is poor in the valley below the ridge
  • Combine with Kent Falls State Park (15 minutes east on Route 7) for a full Litchfield Hills day

When to visit

May through October offers the best trail conditions — May brings hemlock bloom in the valley while October delivers peak fall color on the ridge. Early spring before May should be avoided when the brook corridor is deeply muddy.

Accessibility

Macedonia Brook State Park's loop trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. The route involves rocky terrain, seasonal stream crossings, and significant elevation change; full mobility and hiking-specific footwear are required throughout.
