The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center, at 200 Palm Canyon Dr, has displays, a desert-view garden and a short drive from the Borrego Palm Canyon trail, a 3-mile round-trip walk to a fan palm oasis. After the wettest winters, the desert blooms with wildflowers in February and March. Borrego Springs is a designated dark-sky community, so stargazing is excellent after dark, and Galleta Meadows holds more than 100 giant metal sculptures, including a serpent and mammoths. Summer temperatures often exceed 105F, so visitors go between October and April and carry at least a gallon of water per person. There is no public transit, and many back-country roads require high-clearance vehicles; a standard car handles the main paved roads.
