Petit Jean State Park Mather Lodge

Mather Lodge stands at the center of Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas's oldest state park, atop Petit Jean Mountain in the Arkansas River Valley roughly 70 miles west of Little Rock and about 10 miles south of Morrilton off Highway 154. The lodge was constructed between 1934 and 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose craftsmen quarried local sandstone and shaped native timber into a structure that has anchored the park's identity for nearly ninety years. The site takes its name from Petit Jean, a young French woman of Ozark legend said to have disguised herself as a cabin boy to accompany an explorer to the New World and to be buried on the mountain.

The lodge's interior is centered on a stone-framed fireplace lobby that serves as a communal gathering point across all seasons. Accommodations range from standard rooms and fireplace suites within the main lodge to a collection of vacation cabins scattered through the surrounding woodland, giving guests options from hotel-style stays to self-contained family retreats suited to multi-night outdoor itineraries. The on-site restaurant serves Arkansas home cooking—fried catfish, chicken and dumplings, turnip greens, and cornbread—drawing on farmhouse recipes; breakfast and dinner are the primary meal services.

Mather Lodge has no spa or formal fitness center, but the surrounding park provides an exceptional outdoor amenity set: Cedar Falls, a 95-foot waterfall among the most photographed in Arkansas, is accessible via a 2-mile round-trip trail; Canyon Trail traverses dramatic sandstone formations; and Bear Cave Trail offers shorter family-friendly walking. Service is provided by Arkansas State Parks staff, professional and oriented toward families, group retreats, school programs, and hikers. Advance reservations are essential from March through November and often required months ahead for summer cabin weekends.
