Hardscrabble House Inn occupies a restored late-Victorian mansion at 1509 Rogers Avenue in Fort Smith, a river city on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border where the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers converge. The property sits within a few blocks of Fort Smith National Historic Site, which preserves the federal courthouse, gallows, and jail made famous by Judge Isaac Parker—the 'Hanging Judge' whose court administered law across Indian Territory from 1875 to 1896. The surrounding Rogers Avenue corridor connects to downtown Fort Smith's Main Street Arts District and the Arkansas River Trail.

Built in the late nineteenth century, the house retains its original wraparound porch, hardwood floors, and period millwork.
