Oak Mountain Mountain Biking

Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, roughly 20 miles south of Birmingham, maintains the largest mountain bike trail system in the state, with more than 26 miles of purpose-built singletrack complemented by fire roads, doubletrack, and paved connectors that extend total rideable distance beyond 50 miles. The terrain occupies the southern end of Double Oak Mountain, where sandstone ridgelines, hardwood hollows, and creek drainages create a network with sustained climbing, fast descending, and technical rock features that challenge riders across the full spectrum from beginner to expert.

The singletrack network divides roughly into green-rated flow trails along the ridge shoulders, blue-rated cross-country loops through the park interior, and black-diamond technical sections that drop steeply through boulder fields and root-covered creek crossings on the east face of the ridge. The Peavine Falls Loop, a popular multi-feature route, descends to a 65-foot waterfall and links to creek-side singletrack before climbing back to the ridge. A pump track near the main trailhead provides a warm-up circuit suitable for all skill levels.

Entry to Oak Mountain State Park requires a per-vehicle day-use fee of $5. No additional trail fee applies for mountain biking. Cahaba Cycles in the Birmingham area provides mountain bike rentals, with full-suspension bikes available for $40–$60 per day and hardtails for less. The shop also leads organized guided rides on the Oak Mountain trail network, which is useful for first-time visitors unfamiliar with trail routing. Visitors should download the official Oak Mountain trail map from the Alabama State Parks website or load the Trailforks route data before arrival, as trail markers inside the park are inconsistent.

Conditions are best between October and April when heat and humidity drop to manageable levels. Summer riding remains possible in early mornings before 9 a.m., but afternoon temperatures routinely exceed 90°F with high humidity in July and August. The park's soil drains relatively quickly after rain — typically rideable within 24 hours of moderate rainfall — but clay sections near creek bottoms can remain slippery longer. Trail status updates are posted periodically on the Alabama State Parks social media channels.

Wildlife on the mountain includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and multiple snake species including timber rattlesnakes, which are non-aggressive but occasionally found on warm rocky trail sections in spring and fall. Riders should carry at least 2 liters of water, a basic multi-tool and tire plug kit, and a fully charged phone for trail navigation and emergency contact. Helmets are mandatory under state park rules.
