Oxford lies 95km northwest of London and is reached in as little as 55 minutes by GWR train from Paddington, or via the budget-friendly Oxford Tube coach (about 1h40) from Grosvenor Gardens near Victoria. Most day-trippers arrive by mid-morning to make full use of the city's compact centre, which can be explored largely on foot. The morning is best spent among the university's historic core: the Bodleian Library and Divinity School, one of Europe's oldest libraries, followed by a climb up to the Radcliffe Camera's surrounding square for photographs, then a visit to Christ Church College, whose dining hall inspired the Hogwarts Great Hall in the Harry Potter films. Christ Church also houses its own cathedral, one of the smallest in England. By early afternoon, visitors typically break for lunch at the Covered Market on Market Street, a Victorian-era market hall with independent cafes and pie stalls, or at one of the historic pubs along the High Street such as The Bear or The Turf Tavern. The afternoon suits slower pursuits: free entry to the Ashmolean Museum, Britain's oldest public museum, with collections spanning Egyptian antiquities to Pre-Raphaelite paintings, or punting on the River Cherwell from Magdalen Bridge Boathouse, a leisurely way to see the Botanic Garden and Magdalen College's deer park from the water. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking between colleges and along the river, avoiding the summer's heavier tourist crowds and exam-period restrictions on college access in May and June. Arriving before 10am on the train helps beat both the crowds and the midday queue for the Bodleian's paid tours. Most colleges close their courtyards to visitors during study periods, so checking individual college opening hours in advance is worthwhile before building an itinerary around a specific quad or chapel.
