Çanakkale Archaeological Museum

The Çanakkale Archaeological Museum (Çanakkale Arkeoloji Müzesi), located on 100. Yıl Caddesi in Çanakkale city centre, is the principal repository for antiquities recovered from excavations across Çanakkale Province, which encompasses some of the most archaeologically rich terrain in the eastern Aegean and Marmara regions. The museum's permanent collection spans the Chalcolithic period through the Byzantine era, with particular depth in Bronze Age Troy, Archaic Greek Assos, and Roman-period Dardanus. The ground floor houses the Trojan Antiquities Gallery, displaying pottery, terracotta figurines, bronze tools, and personal ornaments recovered from the nine layers of Hisarlık during successive excavation campaigns by Schliemann, Dörpfeld, Blegen, and the Tübingen team. A dedicated vitrine exhibits the Dardanus Tumulus finds — elaborate gold jewellery and silver vessels from a 4th-century BCE elite burial uncovered near the ancient city of Dardanus on the Dardanelles coast. The Protogeometric and Archaic Greek rooms display ceramics, votive statuettes, and architectural terracottas from Assos and smaller regional sites. A Classical and Hellenistic gallery covers the 5th–1st century BCE period across the province, with marble sculpture, bronze vessels, and numismatic displays. An outdoor sculpture garden adjacent to the main building features oversized architectural elements — column capitals, sarcophagi lids, and architectural friezes — too large for interior display. The curatorial arrangement is broadly chronological, with explanatory panels in Turkish and limited English signage. The museum is a practical first stop for visitors planning to tour Troy, Assos, and Alexandria Troas, providing visual context for the artefact types and stratigraphic periods they will encounter at the open-air sites.
