Mut Valley and Göksu Gorge Walk

The Mut Valley and Göksu Gorge Walk traces the flanks of one of southern Turkey's most scenic river corridors — the Göksu (Blue Water) — as it passes through limestone gorge country around Mut town in Mersin Province, approximately 80 kilometres southwest of Karaman in Karaman Province. The 6-kilometre loop gains 200 metres of elevation and combines riparian forest walking with open limestone hillside views.

From Karaman, the D695 highway leads southwest to Mut in approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Mut town is the gateway for this walk and the last opportunity to stock up on water and food; basic supplies are available in the town centre. The trailhead is accessible from the valley-floor road running alongside the Göksu. Street parking is available near the riverside.

The walk begins along the river bank on a compacted dirt path shaded by plane trees, willows, and oleander — a riverside section providing welcome shade in warmer months. After approximately 1.5 kilometres the path climbs the gorge wall on a rougher, switchbacking track, gaining 200 metres to a limestone ridge with open views into the gorge and toward the Taurus ranges above. The upper section is rocky and requires sturdy footwear.

The descent follows a different line, dropping through a narrower, drier gully before rejoining the riverside path back to the start. The full loop takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours at a comfortable pace. Water is visible in the Göksu at the start, but river water should be treated before drinking; carry at least 1 litre of clean water.

The gorge is noted for birdlife — kingfishers and grey herons are regularly seen along the river, while raptors patrol the limestone cliffs above. The upper ridge section offers distant views toward the Alahan Monastery site, approximately 20 kilometres northeast, which can be combined with this walk on the same day trip from Karaman.
