Meydan Hamamı (Historic Turkish Bath)

Meydan Hamamı is a working historic Ottoman hammam (Turkish bath) located in the bazaar district of Karaman city, Turkey, positioned near the historic market square from which it takes its name — meydan meaning "square" or "plaza." The building dates from the Ottoman period and retains the classic spatial sequence of a traditional hammam: the camekân (dressing and cooling room), the tepidarium (warm transition chamber), and the hararet (hot room) culminating in the heated marble göbektaşı — the large central slab on which the kese (exfoliating scrub) and köpük masajı (soap-foam massage) treatments are performed. The dome of the hararet is pierced with star-shaped apertures that filter the natural light into soft, warm points — the characteristic visual signature of an operating Ottoman bath interior. The exterior dome profile of Meydan Hamamı is visible above the surrounding bazaar rooflines. Both men and women are catered for in separate sessions or designated sections with dedicated attendants. Standard treatment prices range from ₺200 to ₺350 for the bath entry with kese scrub and soap massage; optional oil massage is priced additionally. A complete session including bathing time and the standard treatment lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The hammam draws primarily local residents rather than tourists, which keeps the atmosphere authentic and the service matter-of-fact. Meydan Hamamı provides an entirely different experience from the large tourist-targeted hammams of Istanbul or Cappadocia — it is a working public bath used for the same purposes it has served its neighbourhood for centuries.
