Ermenek Canyon Boat Adventure

Ermenek Dam, completed in 2012, is one of the tallest arch dams in Turkey, standing approximately 297 metres above the riverbed of the Ermenek (Göksu) River in southern Karaman Province. The reservoir it created — extending some 25 kilometres back into the Taurus Mountains — submerged a dramatic limestone canyon whose sheer walls rise up to 400 metres on either side of the water. Boat tours depart from the Ermenek waterfront, approximately 115 kilometres southwest of Karaman city, and navigate deep into the canyon, offering close-up views of the near-vertical limestone cliffs, hanging vegetation, and occasional waterfalls fed by springs in the canyon walls. The canyon boat adventure is primarily organised informally: local boat operators moored at the Ermenek waterfront run tours on demand, typically carrying 4–10 passengers per vessel. Advance booking is not always possible; visitors generally arrive at the waterfront and negotiate directly with operators. Tours last between 3 and 4 hours and cover approximately 10–15 kilometres of the reservoir's canyon section. The canyon walls cast deep shadows, keeping water temperatures cool even in summer, and the acoustics create a memorable echo effect when sound carries across the water. No prior boating experience is necessary; operators provide life vests, and the water in the reservoir is calm with no rapids or currents within the tour zone. Ermenek is a small town with limited tourist infrastructure, so visitors should carry cash for the boat fare. The drive from Karaman city takes approximately 2–2.5 hours via mountainous roads; an early start is recommended to allow time for both the drive and the full tour. The scenery is most dramatic in morning light, when low sun illuminates the upper canyon walls while the lower depths remain in cool shadow.
