Meydan Börek ve Çay

Meydan Börek ve Çay is a börekçi (pastry specialist) and tea house on Cumhuriyet Meydanı, the central civic square of Iğdır in eastern Turkey. It occupies the busiest pedestrian node in the city centre, opening at 06:00 to catch early workers before the business day begins and continuing through to 20:00. Börek — the savoury layered pastry that spans Ottoman culinary tradition from Istanbul to the Iranian border — is prepared in several distinct varieties: su böreği is the labour-intensive layered version with alternating sheets of thin dough, boiled then baked, filled with white cheese and parsley; sigara böreği are small, crisp rolled tubes of dough filled with cheese and deep-fried, named for their resemblance to a cigarette; and açma, a softer leavened roll baked rather than fried, is more properly in the bread category and is served warm. The kitchen bakes from early morning and replenishes throughout the day. Turkish tea — black, brewed in a double pot (çaydanlık), poured strong and diluted to preference — is the universal pairing and the venue's lifeblood. A standard glass of çay with a slice of börek costs less than ₺30, and the full range rarely exceeds ₺150 per person, making Meydan Börek ve Çay the most affordable breakfast and snack option on the main square. The outdoor tables on the square are among the best people-watching positions in the city during the morning hours.
