Aras Nehri Balıkçısı (Riverbank Fish Grill)

Aras Nehri Balıkçısı (Riverbank Fish Grill) is a seasonal open-air fish restaurant on the bank of the Aras River, situated along the Iğdır–Nakhchivan road as it follows the river valley southeast of Iğdır city. The Aras (Araxes) is one of the major rivers of the Caucasian and Anatolian borderlands, forming most of the boundary between Turkey and Armenia across the province, and carries considerable historical and geographical significance. The restaurant operates only between May and October when outdoor conditions permit and freshwater fish are most active in the regional water system. Sazan balığı (common carp) is the primary river catch: scaled, gutted, and grilled whole over a wood fire built at the riverside, with no electric or gas equipment. Alabalık (trout) sourced from highland tributaries is the premium option, with a leaner flesh and cleaner flavour. Köy ekmeği (village bread), baked in a nearby tandır, accompanies every plate. The entirely open-air setting on the actual riverbank — with the sound of the current, views toward the Armenian Gegham Mountains to the west, and the quality of light over the Aras plain — gives the restaurant an atmosphere impossible to replicate in an urban setting. At ₺150–300 per person the pricing is modest for the experience. Seasonal and weather-dependent operation makes calling ahead essential.
