Istanbul Wellness & Spa Guide 2026

The wellness side of Istanbul: genuine local traditions, serious spas, and retreats worth the booking.

Istanbul has 12+ spas and wellness retreats covered in this guide, led by Çemberlitaş Hamamı, Cağaloğlu Hamamı and Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı. Each entry below includes the practical details — what it costs, when to go, and how to plan around it.

With a history spanning over 2,500 years as Constantinople, Byzantium, and Istanbul, it holds an unrivaled density of world-class monuments, vibrant bazaars, and a thriving contemporary arts and food scene.

Wellness travel tips

Get the most from your wellness experience.

Tip

Historic hammams separate bathing by gender or run staggered hours for men and women — check the schedule before arriving, as some (like Süleymaniye Hamamı) are mixed-gender by exception.

Tip

Bring or rent a peştemal (thin cotton wrap) and flip-flops; most hammams provide these as part of the entry fee, but a swimsuit underneath is optional and accepted for foreign visitors.

Tip

Book historic hammams like Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı and Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı a day or two ahead in peak season (May–September), since sessions run on fixed time slots.

Tip

A cash tip of 10–15% for the tellak (attendant) who performs the scrub and massage is customary and appreciated, even when the entry price is already paid.

Tip

Arrive at least 15 minutes before a hammam appointment to change and acclimate to the steam room gradually rather than lying directly on the hottest part of the heated platform.

Tip

Drink water before and after a hammam session — the heat and steam are dehydrating, and most bathhouses have a cool-down lounge (camekan) for resting afterward.

Tip

Modern hotel spas along the Bosphorus (Çırağan Palace, Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La) accept walk-in day guests for a fee even for non-hotel guests, but treatments should be reserved in advance.

Tip

For thermal day trips to Yalova or Bursa, pack a swimsuit, towel, and comfortable sandals, and plan for the full return journey time (3–4 hours round trip) when scheduling the rest of the day.

Tip

Yoga studios in Cihangir, Nişantaşı, and Kadıköy mostly teach in Turkish with some English-speaking classes — confirm the language of instruction when booking a drop-in session.
