Iğdır is a small province in far-eastern Turkey, cradled in the broad Ararat Plain at Turkey's lowest elevation east of the Euphrates. The province sits at a dramatic convergence of Armenian, Kurdish, Azerbaijani, and Turkish cultures, with the snow-capped twin peaks of Mount Ararat (Ağrı Dağı) dominating the skyline and providing one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the world.
The Ararat Plain has been inhabited since at least the 3rd millennium BC, making it one of eastern Anatolia's most continuously occupied landscapes. It formed the eastern frontier of the Urartian kingdom (c. 860–590 BC), which built fortresses and irrigation channels across the region. Subsequently the plain passed under Median, Achaemenid Persian, Armenian, Parthian, Roman, Sassanid, Byzantine, Arab, Seljuk, Mongol, and Ottoman rule. The 1877–78 Russo-Turkish War shifted control of parts of the region to Russia until the 1921 Treaty of Kars restored Turkey's eastern borders. Iğdır Province was carved from Kars Province only in 1992 — making it one of Turkey's newest administrative units — despite being one of its oldest settled territories.
