Kemaliye Taş Han occupies a restored nineteenth-century stone caravanserai in the historic centre of Kemaliye (historically known as Eğin), a compact Ottoman town on the right bank of the Euphrates River approximately 95 km southwest of Erzincan city. The town is the gateway to Karanlık Kanyon (Dark Canyon), one of eastern Anatolia's most dramatic gorge landscapes, and the property sits within a few minutes' walk of the main bazaar street and the wooden-balconied houses that give Kemaliye its distinctive silhouette.
The building is constructed from the region's characteristic dark basalt and limestone, with thick walls, vaulted ceilings, and stone-flagged floors that provide natural insulation in summer and retain warmth in cooler months. Restoration work has preserved original masonry while introducing private bathrooms and reliable Wi-Fi throughout. Rooms are split between standard doubles with courtyard-facing windows and superior rooms overlooking rooftops toward the Euphrates valley; the superior category receives more afternoon light and is noticeably quieter.
Breakfast is served in the stone courtyard or the vaulted ground-floor hall depending on season, drawing on local produce including Kemaliye honey, walnut preserves, and tulum cheese from the surrounding uplands. No dedicated spa or fitness room is present, which is unremarkable given the property's boutique scale and the wealth of walking and hiking routes directly outside the door.
Service is owner-led and attentive. Hosts are typically fluent in Turkish; basic English is managed at reception. The han suits independent travellers, heritage enthusiasts, and hikers using Kemaliye as a base for canyon and riverside treks. Families are welcome but should note that the stone stairways between floors are steep and there is no lift.

Tips for visiting
- Book the superior Euphrates-view room well in advance — the han has a small number of rooms and fills quickly in July and August
- Bring cash; card payment is not reliably accepted in Kemaliye town or at the property
- The Karanlık Kanyon trail entrance is a 15–20 minute walk from the han; sturdy footwear is essential as the path has uneven stone sections and river crossings
- If driving from Erzincan, arrive before dark — the mountain road narrows in several places and is poorly lit after sunset
