Hasankeyf Pansiyon

Hasankeyf Pansiyon operates in Yeni Hasankeyf — the new settlement constructed on higher ground above the Tigris valley to house residents displaced when the Ilısu Dam reservoir began filling around 2020, submerging the lower sections of old Hasankeyf. The ancient city of Hasankeyf, carved into limestone cliffs above the Tigris River over millennia of continuous habitation, was partially preserved on the elevated areas, including the rock-cut chambers, the medieval citadel, and portions of the historic bridge. The Zeynel Bey Tomb and the Artukid-era El Rızk Mosque were relocated to higher ground before the flooding.

The pansiyon is a small, family-run guesthouse in the Ottoman tradition of affordable provincial accommodation — spare in facilities but warm in hospitality. Rooms are simple and clean: beds, local textiles, shared or private bathrooms depending on room type, and sufficient warmth in winter when the Tigris valley becomes cold and frequently foggy. Air-conditioning units handle the intense summer heat of the valley, where temperatures in July regularly exceed 42°C.

Breakfast is served each morning as a traditional southeastern Anatolian spread — locally produced white cheese, wild thyme honey, olives from the Midyat region, fresh bread, eggs, and tea. The meal alone justifies the room rate at this price point and sets guests up for a full morning at the archaeological site.

Being based in Yeni Hasankeyf rather than driving from Batman city gives guests access to the site at dawn, when the light on the cliff faces and the new reservoir's surface is most dramatic and crowds from city day-trippers have not yet arrived. Staff at the pansiyon are deeply familiar with the site's history and can provide informal guidance on the most significant surviving structures.
