Şanlıurfa combines one of the most important archaeological sites in the world with a city centre built around a very different kind of attraction: a pool of sacred carp tied to the local Abraham legend. Göbeklitepe's carved T-shaped pillars, dated to roughly 9600-8000 BC, predate Stonehenge and the pyramids by thousands of years and have reshaped how the earliest monumental construction is understood. It is a long day from Batman, but one built around a genuinely unique site rather than a generic ruin.
