Ulugazi Canyon Gorge

Ulugazi Canyon is a narrow limestone gorge located south of Bartın city in Bartın province, Turkey, carved by a stream that runs year-round and is most voluminous in spring. The canyon walls rise steeply on both sides, creating a slot-canyon effect where direct sunlight reaches the floor for only a limited window around midday in summer. This brief window of floor-level sunlight produces dramatic shaft-of-light effects against dark, moss-covered walls, making midday — ordinarily unfavoured by landscape photographers — the prime shooting time at this location. In the morning and late afternoon, the high canyon walls cast the gorge into deep, controlled shade, which enables long-exposure river and cascade photography without the challenge of blown-out highlights in the sky. The stream forms several small cascades and pools along the canyon floor that respond well to long-exposure technique: a 6-stop neutral density filter held for two to four seconds smooths the water into silky streaks while the dark wall detail is retained. Access requires following an unpaved trail from Ulugazi village that descends into the gorge over approximately 30 to 40 minutes on foot; the path involves rock scrambling near the stream and can be slippery after rain. The canyon is within a protected natural area and drone flights are not permitted. No admission fee is charged at the village access point, but the road from Bartın city is unpaved for the final kilometres and benefits from a high-clearance vehicle in wet conditions.
