Topkapi Palace served as the administrative heart of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries, housing the sultans from Mehmed II in the 1460s until Abdülmecid I moved his court to Dolmabahçe in 1856. Perched on the Seraglio Point where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn in Istanbul's Fatih district, the palace complex covers 700,000 square metres and is enclosed by walls running more than five kilometres.
The palace is organized around four successive courtyards. The First Court, once open to the public, contains the Byzantine church of Hagia Irene. The Second Court, entered through the Imperial Gate of Salutation, leads to the kitchens — now housing one of the world's finest collections of Chinese celadon — and the council chamber where imperial policy was debated. The Third Court contains the Audience Chamber where the sultan received foreign ambassadors, the Imperial Treasury, and the Sacred Relics room, which holds the mantle of the Prophet Muhammad, his bow, and a tooth, drawing pilgrims as well as tourists. The Fourth Court opens onto terraced gardens with views over both the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
The Imperial Treasury in the Third Court displays some of the most extraordinary objects assembled by any ruling dynasty: the Topkapi Dagger with its three enormous emerald-set handle, the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond, and jewel-encrusted armour, thrones, and ceremonial weapons. Visitors typically spend 30 to 45 minutes in the Treasury alone.
The Harem, entered from the Second Court and requiring a separate ticket, consists of over 400 rooms where the sultan's family and concubines lived in gilded seclusion. The tiled chambers, painted ceilings, and the marble-clad Courtyard of the Queen Mother are architectural highlights that rival the rest of the palace.
The full complex requires two to three hours to see at a reasonable pace; adding the Harem adds at least 45 minutes. The palace is closed on Tuesdays. Tickets can be purchased online, which is strongly advisable in summer to avoid queues that can exceed two hours.
