Butterfly Valley

Butterfly Valley (Kelebek Vadisi) is a sheltered coastal canyon accessible only by boat from Ölüdeniz or by a challenging hiking descent from the village of Faralya, located on the Fethiye coast of Muğla province, southwest Turkey. The valley takes its name from the Jersey tiger moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria) and other butterfly species that inhabit the forested canyon in summer, particularly from July through September when the population peaks.

The canyon runs approximately one kilometre from the beach to the base of a 350-metre waterfall that plunges from the canyon rim in spring. Flanking walls rise nearly vertically to the clifftop above, creating a self-contained microclimate of shade, humidity, and vegetation. The beach at the canyon mouth is a coarse mix of sand and pebble, with clear turquoise water ideal for swimming and snorkelling directly from the shore.

Boats from Ölüdeniz take approximately 15 to 20 minutes and run throughout the day from around 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in summer, with multiple operators offering round-trip services. The boats moor directly on the beach. A small entry fee is charged on arrival. Visitors have the option to return on any subsequent boat or stay overnight.

Overnight accommodation is available in simple wooden bungalows and a campsite run by the valley's management. The absence of road access keeps the accommodation basic: bucket showers, limited electricity, and communal dining. This deliberate simplicity appeals strongly to backpackers and those seeking genuine disconnection from resort life. The valley has no ATM and limited card payment facilities; cash is necessary.

The hike from Faralya village descends 350 metres on a steep, loose-shale path that requires confident footing. The descent takes 30 to 45 minutes; the ascent is considerably harder. Most visitors take the boat down and hike up to Faralya if attempting the trail at all.
