Ardahan Hamamı (Turkish Bath)

Ardahan Hamamı is a traditional Turkish bath situated in the city centre of Ardahan, a small provincial capital in northeastern Turkey near the Georgian border. Operating on a community-oriented model that has persisted for generations, the hammam follows the classic Ottoman layout: a warm antechamber (soğukluk) for undressing, a central heated chamber (sıcaklık) anchored by a raised marble platform (göbek taşı) heated from below, and private washing niches (halvet) around the perimeter. The atmosphere is unpretentious and functional — steam-heavy, dimly lit, and centred on ritual rather than luxury.

The signature treatment is the kese, a vigorous full-body exfoliation performed by a bath attendant (tellak for men, natır for women) using a coarse horsehair or goat-hair mitt that strips accumulated dead skin from the body. This is followed by a foam massage using hand-whipped lather derived from olive-oil or local herbal soap, then a rinse with warm water scooped from copper or stone basins. The steam room operates at temperatures appropriate to the northeastern climate, where winters are harsh and the warmth of the hammam carries particular seasonal value. Attendants are experienced in traditional methods rather than formally trained in contemporary spa protocols.

Facilities are modest: changing rooms with pegs or basic lockers, cotton wrapping towels (peştemal) provided or available to purchase, wooden clogs (takunya) loaned at the desk. There is no swimming pool, relaxation lounge, or menu of premium add-ons. The hammam's clientele is predominantly local — residents using the bath as part of a weekly routine — which gives visiting travellers an unusually direct window into everyday Ardahan life. Walk-in access is the norm and no advance booking is required. Payment is cash only; the basic entry fee covers steam and washing, with kese and foam massage charged as additions. Tipping the attending tellak or natır at roughly 10–15% of the service total is conventional practice.
