Damal District Highlands

The Damal district highlands occupy a rolling plateau approximately 30 km south of Ardahan city in northeastern Turkey, sitting at elevations of 1,600–2,000 metres and representing the pastoral core of what is widely considered Turkey's premier cheese-producing region. The highlands are best known as the source of Ardahan kaşar peyniri, a hard yellow cheese made from sheep and cow milk that is aged and sold throughout Turkey. Village cooperatives and individual family farms across the Damal plateau produce this cheese using traditional methods passed down through generations.

In June and July, the plateau comes alive with wildflowers — purple vetches, yellow ragworts, and white yarrow cover the meadows between scattered stands of fir trees. This period coincides with the yayla season, when local families move their herds to the high summer pasture from their lower-valley villages. Small farmstay guesthouses in Damal town and surrounding villages offer accommodation for visitors who want to experience this pastoral lifestyle at close range.

Damal town is accessible by dolmuş from Ardahan in approximately 45 minutes. From the town, the surrounding plateau is walkable or reachable by any vehicle on unpaved tracks. The scenery is primarily open grassland with low rolling hills, giving the highlands a wide, sky-dominated character quite distinct from the forested Yalnızçam area to the west.

For cheese enthusiasts, Damal offers an opportunity to buy directly from producers. Small stalls at farmsteads sell kaşar at prices substantially below what is charged in western Turkish cities. Wildflower honey from bee farms in the area is another local product available at the same farmstands. The Saturday market in Ardahan city also carries Damal-sourced products, but visiting the highlands directly allows inspection of the production environment.

Walking on the Damal plateau is informal — no marked trails exist. The most practical approach is to take the dolmuş to Damal town, walk out of town on any of the tracks leading onto the plateau, and return before the late-afternoon dolmuş departure. Most plateau walks from town reach rewarding viewpoints within 30–60 minutes.
