Posof Canyon Trekking

The Posof district, 80 kilometres north of Ardahan city in Turkey's Ardahan province, cuts through a dramatic landscape of limestone gorges carved by the Posof Stream and its tributaries as they descend toward the Kura River and the Georgian border. The Posof Canyon trek follows the stream valley through narrow passages flanked by vertical rock walls, wooded plateaus, and river-cobbled sections that require straightforward rock-hopping and occasional stream crossings. The route is approximately 12 kilometres return, with an elevation change of around 400 metres, and takes five to six hours of active walking. No formal trail markings exist; the route follows the stream bed and shepherd paths along the gorge floor. The difficulty is moderate — basic fitness is required, as the trail involves scrambling over river boulders and crossing the stream on stepping stones at multiple points. Waterproof footwear or the willingness to wade in shallow sections is advisable during spring and early summer, when snowmelt raises water levels. The canyon walls support colonies of bee-eaters, swifts, and raptors, and the forested sections above the gorge are rich in wild herbs and summer wildflowers. The nearest settlement with any facilities is Posof town, where basic restaurants serve çorba (soup) and grilled meat dishes. Transport from Ardahan runs by bus several times daily; the journey takes roughly two hours on mountain roads and costs approximately 80 TRY. No commercial trekking operator offers guided Posof Canyon tours, making the route entirely self-organised. Visitors should carry at least two litres of water, high-energy snacks, and a rain layer, as the canyon can channel wind and localised rain even on otherwise fine summer days. The area sits close to the Georgian border; trekkers should remain on the Turkish side of the Kura River and carry identification documents, as border gendarmerie patrols operate in the wider district.
