Kaş Lycian Tombs Walk

The Kaş Lycian Tombs Walk is a short but historically rich loop through the hillside streets and cliff edges of Kaş town, a picturesque harbour settlement on the southwestern tip of Antalya Province. The walk explores the legacy of the ancient Lycian civilisation, which dominated this coastline from the 6th century BC until Roman annexation, leaving behind distinctive monumental tombs carved directly into the limestone cliffs. The walk begins at the main square (Cumhuriyet Meydanı) in Kaş harbour, following signed routes uphill through the whitewashed stone houses of the old town quarter. Within minutes, the first Lycian rock-cut tomb appears in the cliff face above the streets — its ornate pilaster facade carved with traditional Lycian architectural motifs. The most prominent tomb, embedded directly in the rock above rooftop level, is visible from the harbour below and forms one of the defining images of the town. Continuing uphill, walkers reach the remarkably well-preserved Hellenistic theatre dating to approximately 200 BC, set into the hillside with a circular orchestra and tiers of stone seating commanding views across the harbour and out to the Greek island of Meis (Kastellorizo), just 2 kilometres offshore. From the theatre, the path follows a ridge above town past additional smaller tomb clusters and panoramic viewpoints before looping back down through a residential neighbourhood to the harbour. The full 3-kilometre loop can be completed in 90 minutes at a leisurely pace but rewards those who allow 2–3 hours to pause at each tomb and viewpoint. No entrance fee is charged for the walk itself; the tombs and theatre are open-air monuments accessible at any time. The Kaş Museum, near the main square, provides archaeological context for Lycian material found across the region and is worth a 45-minute visit as an accompaniment.
