Phaselis Ancient City

Phaselis, located on a pine-forested peninsula in the Kemer District of Antalya province, was an ancient Lycian port city renowned for its three natural harbors, each serving a different commercial purpose in antiquity. The northern harbor faces a calm bay, the southern harbor was the main commercial anchorage, and the smallest central harbor was for military use. Between these harbors the ancient city's colonnaded main street, aqueduct, theatre, and agora occupy a narrow strip of land shaded by tall Aegean pines, creating one of the most scenic archaeological settings in Turkey. Alexander the Great wintered at Phaselis in 333 BC on his way to the conquest of Persia, and the city gave him the golden key to its gates, an event recorded in ancient sources. Visitors today can swim directly from the city's southern harbor in clear turquoise water, exploring the submerged sections of ancient stonework visible just below the surface. Snorkeling gear allows a closer look at column drums and wall foundations that have settled onto the seabed. The combination of swimming, sunbathing, and archaeological exploration is unique to Phaselis among the major sites of the region. The pine forest provides welcome shade, keeping the site comfortable even in midsummer. The theatre is small but well preserved and looks across the northern bay. The aqueduct arches crossing the peninsula are among the best-preserved examples of their kind in Turkey. The site has a car park, basic refreshment stand, and toilet facilities at the entrance.
