Kızlar Sarayı Terrace

The Kızlar Sarayı Terrace — the 'Palace of Maidens' ledge — is a partially preserved rock-cut terrace high on the southern face of Mount Harşena in Amasya, directly adjacent to and immediately right of the Pontic Royal Rock Tombs. Most visitors to Amasya stop at the main tomb viewing platform below, unaware that a short additional path leads to this terrace, which gives an altogether different perspective on the carved chambers. From the terrace level, the Pontic tomb facades are visible at roughly eye height rather than from far below, allowing close inspection of the column capitals, cornice carvings, and interior niches that are difficult to see from the valley floor. The same vantage point also yields the most unobstructed panorama over the full length of the Yeşilırmak gorge, the Ottoman houses of Yalıboyu on the north bank, and the domed roofline of the Sultan Bayezid II Külliye. The terrace name derives from an Ottoman folk tradition; archaeologists believe it originally served as a palatial or ceremonial Pontic precinct. The terrace itself is partly in ruins, with sections of the original platform surviving as rough rock surfaces and remnants of masonry walls. Reaching it requires only moderate fitness — the same ascent as the rock tombs, branching right near the tomb viewpoint. The Kızlar Sarayı Terrace receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of the main tomb area, making it one of Amasya's most rewarding hidden viewpoints.
