Aksaray is a province in Central Anatolia (İç Anadolu), Turkey, on the southwestern edge of the Cappadocia region. It is best known for the Ihlara Valley, a 14-kilometre canyon lined with Byzantine rock-cut churches and frescoes, the towering Selime Monastery, and the Sultanhanı Caravanserai, the largest Seljuk han in Turkey. With the volcanic cone of Hasan Mountain on the horizon, the salt expanse of Lake Tuz to the north, and Göreme roughly an hour east, Aksaray serves as an uncrowded gateway to Cappadocia.
Aksaray sits on the Central Anatolian plateau at roughly 980 m elevation, producing a dry continental climate with cold winters, hot summers, and mild but short springs and autumns. Annual rainfall is low (around 320-360 mm), concentrated in spring and autumn. Snow covers the city and the Ihlara Valley rim for several weeks each winter, while Hasandağı carries snow from November through May. Summers are hot and sunny with very low humidity — daytime highs of 32-36°C are common in July and August, but nights remain cool at 16-20°C.
