Sultanhanı Caravanserai Portal

The Sultanhanı Caravanserai (Sultan Han) in Aksaray Province, Turkey, is the largest Seljuk caravanserai in Anatolia, built in 1229 on the historic Silk Road route between Konya and Aksaray. The complex spreads across 3,900 square metres and includes a summer courtyard, a winter hall, a mosque pavilion, and a fortified outer wall — but the supreme photographic subject is the monumental entry portal, a triumphal arch of elaborately carved stone standing approximately 12 metres high. The portal's face is covered in complex geometric interlace, muqarnas stalactite vaulting in the tympanum, and Arabic inscriptions recording the patronage of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I. The most successful approach for portal photography is front-on, at a distance of 15–20 metres, with a wide-angle lens (16–24mm) capturing the full arch height from a low position — approximately 1 metre off the ground — which avoids converging verticals and places the decorative peak against open sky. Mid-morning light (09:00–11:00) delivers the optimal illumination: the low eastern sun strikes the relief carving at a 30–45 degree angle, emphasising the depth of the muqarnas and the cut-stone ornament. Tour groups from Cappadocia typically arrive between 10:00 and 11:30; arriving at gate opening (08:30) or after 13:00 provides near-empty conditions. The interior courtyard and winter hall offer additional compositions: the covered barrel-vaulted hall admits shafts of light through oculus windows at midday. Admission is approximately 100 TRY (2025); Müzekart is accepted. Tripods are permitted in the exterior and courtyard areas. Flash photography is prohibited in the covered hall.
