Mountain Biking on the Cappadocian Plateau

The volcanic plateau between Güzelyurt and Ihlara in Aksaray Province offers some of the most scenic mountain biking terrain in central Turkey: wide dirt tracks, minimal traffic, and a dramatic backdrop of fairy-chimney outcrops, ruined caravanserais, and canyon edges that distinguish the landscape from anywhere else in the region. Routes typically originate from Güzelyurt town centre and fan out across the plateau in circuits of 20–50 km, with the most popular loop following the valley rim above Ihlara before descending to Belisırma and returning via the Manastır Valley. Elevation change is moderate — the plateau sits at 1,100–1,300 metres with rolling relief — making the terrain accessible to riders of intermediate fitness without requiring specialist technical skills. Karamanlı Konağı in Güzelyurt provides mountain bike hire and printed route cards; the bikes are basic hardtail models suited to gravel and dirt surfaces. Riders should download offline maps before departure, as signage is minimal and tracks occasionally fork without visible guidance. Spring is the premium season: wildflowers blanket the plateau edges in April and May, temperatures remain below 25°C, and the landscape is lush rather than the dry ochre of summer. The exposed plateau in July and August can reach 35°C by midday, making early starts essential and carrying extra water non-negotiable. The circuit is almost entirely free of motor traffic on the plateau sections; brief tarmac stretches connect Güzelyurt to the start of the dirt track network. Mechanical breakdowns present the primary practical risk — the nearest bike repair workshop is in Aksaray city, 45 km away — so carrying a basic repair kit, pump, and spare inner tube is advisable. Riders combining biking with the Ihlara Valley hike can lock bikes at Belisırma restaurants and descend into the canyon on foot.
