The conical man-made mound at the very top of Mount Nemrut, raised from crushed limestone to a height of around 50 metres over the presumed tomb of King Antiochus I. Never excavated, the tumulus is believed to conceal the king's burial chamber, and its loose pale stone forms the dramatic backdrop to the statue terraces. It is the highest point of the site and a striking silhouette against the dawn or dusk sky.
