One of the largest dams in the world, the Atatürk Dam impounds the Euphrates south of Adıyaman, its rock-fill wall standing 169 metres high and 1,819 metres long. Completed in 1992 as the centrepiece of the Southeastern Anatolia Project, its vast reservoir stretches up to 180 kilometres and powers a major hydroelectric station. Viewpoints over the crest and the blue expanse of water are a popular stop, and boat trips and lakeside fish restaurants operate in the warmer months.
