Varda Viaduct (German Bridge), Karaisalı

The Varda Viaduct — locally known as the Alman Köprüsü (German Bridge) — is a 172-metre railway bridge spanning the Çakıt gorge near Karaisalı in Adana province, Turkey. Built between 1909 and 1912 by German engineers during construction of the Baghdad Railway, the structure rises 99 metres above the gorge floor on a graceful stone-and-steel arch, with limestone canyon walls closing in on both sides. It gained international fame as a filming location for the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall, though the engineering feat has been a landmark for over a century. The classic photography vantage point is a clifftop position on the western rim of the gorge, reached by a short but rough dirt track followed by a scramble over loose rock and scrub. From this viewpoint the full side-profile of the arch is visible, with the green Çakıt river threading far below and dense forest covering the gorge slopes. When a freight or passenger train crosses the viaduct, the image gains an extra layer of drama. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) bring lush green slopes, manageable temperatures and the best light angle — low southwestern side-light in the final hour before sunset rakes across the stonework and picks out the arch's curvature against the shadowed gorge. Winter mist occasionally fills the canyon at dawn for ethereal, low-contrast conditions. The gorge is deep enough that direct sunlight reaches the bridge only at specific angles; golden-hour timing is critical. Drone operators should note that the corridor is an active railway zone: flights over rail infrastructure in Türkiye require a permit from the SHGM. No entrance fee is charged for the viewpoint and tripods are unrestricted, but the path to the rim involves uneven terrain.
