Anavarza, the ancient Anazarbus, was a major Roman and Byzantine city of Cilicia, later an Armenian capital. Its sprawling ruins on the Çukurova plain include a monumental triumphal arch, colonnaded street, mosaics, a theatre, and a dramatic clifftop fortress reached by a steep climb, all set against a long limestone ridge.

A small site museum near the entrance displays carved capitals and inscriptions recovered from excavations across the site.
The focal point of any visit is the dramatic clifftop fortress, which requires a steep 20–30 minute scramble up loose rock and uneven paths. The effort is rewarded with panoramic views across the Çukurova plain and the Ceyhan River valley. The Armenian-era curtain walls and round towers ring the ridge in an almost unbroken circuit, with several cisterns and vaulted chambers surviving intact. Allow at least an hour on the summit and descend carefully on the loose limestone scree.
Afternoon can be spent at the picnic area near the site base before the return drive. There are no restaurants within the ruins, so packing lunch and plenty of water is advisable. The village of Dilekkaya has a tea house. Combining Anavarza with a short stop at Misis Mosaic Museum and Yılankale Castle on the return creates a rewarding full-day eastern Çukurova loop. Entry to the open-air ruins is free or requires a nominal fee; the small mosaic shelter at the base has a separate modest ticket.
