Seyhan Dam and Lake (Seyhan Barajı)

The Seyhan Dam (Seyhan Barajı) was completed in 1956 as one of Turkey's earliest major hydroelectric and irrigation infrastructure projects, partly financed by the World Bank, and its reservoir forms a large lake stretching northward from the dam wall into the forested foothills of the Taurus Mountains north of Adana. The dam itself is an earth-fill structure approximately 700 metres long and 49 metres high, and the lake it creates covers roughly 43 square kilometres at full capacity, supplying electricity and irrigation water to the agricultural Çukurova plain surrounding Adana. Over the following decades the lakeshore north of the dam developed into one of Adana's primary recreation zones, with a string of tea gardens, family fish restaurants and lakeside walking areas established in the Sarıçam district, approximately 15 kilometres from the city centre. The dam wall viewpoint provides a wide panorama over the reservoir, and in clear conditions the wooded Taurus ridge lines are visible to the north. A waterfront promenade runs along the lakeshore in the Sarıçam area, popular with Adana families particularly on weekend afternoons. Resident birdlife includes herons, cormorants and kingfishers along the quieter northern arms of the lake, and rowing boats are sometimes available for hire near the restaurant area. The site is reached by car or taxi from central Adana in around 20 minutes. A typical visit of 1 to 2 hours covers the dam viewpoint, a walk along the lake promenade and a refreshment stop at one of the waterside cafes.
