Çorum

Çorum is a mid-sized city in north-central Turkey, perched on the Anatolian plateau at roughly 800 m elevation. It serves as the provincial capital and is best known as the jumping-off point for the UNESCO World Heritage Hittite sites of Hattuşa and Alacahöyük. The city itself harbours a fine archaeological museum, animated bazaars, and a tradition of producing Turkey's finest roasted chickpeas (leblebi). Visitors find a genuinely local atmosphere, affordable prices, and easy day-trip access to some of the most consequential ruins in the ancient world.

About Çorum

Çorum province occupies a landscape of rolling steppe, volcanic peaks, and river valleys between the Pontic mountain foothills and the Central Anatolian plateau. The city of Çorum sits along the Çorum Stream, flanked by low hills. Historically the region was a crossroads of Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, Byzantine, Danishmend, Seljuk, and Ottoman civilisations. Today it is a market and university city with roughly 250,000 urban residents. Its signature export—leblebi (roasted and dried chickpeas)—is enjoyed across Turkey and sold in every shop. The Çorum Archaeological Museum is one of the best Hittite collections outside Ankara. A visit of two to four days covers the city highlights and the major Hittite day trips comfortably.
