A friendly budget resort set in a secluded bay on Koh Tao's north coast, Mango Bay offers simple bungalows steps from the water with some of the best snorkeling on the island right from the beach.
Mango Bay Resort occupies a secluded cove on the northern tip of Koh Tao, accessible by longtail boat from Mae Haad pier (15–20 minutes) or via a steep unpaved track from the island's interior road. The bay is one of Koh Tao's most sheltered natural anchorages, protected by rocky headlands on both sides, with a fringing coral reef that begins almost at the waterline — making it one of the most accessible snorkelling spots on the island without requiring a boat tour or dive trip.
The resort's layout is intimate: a small number of wooden bungalows arranged along the hillside above the beach, with steps leading down to the sand. Architecture is straightforward tropical — timber frames, thatched or corrugated roofs, mosquito nets, and small verandas with hammocks. Fan bungalows are the predominant option; a small number of air-conditioned units are available at a modest premium. Bathrooms are en-suite; cold-water showers in fan rooms, hot water in AC rooms.
The on-site restaurant at the beachfront terrace serves Thai standards — pad thai, green curry, grilled fresh fish — alongside Western breakfasts and cold drinks. Dining here after a morning's snorkelling, overlooking the bay and the resident longtail boats at anchor, is one of the resort's informal highlights.
Because there is no road access, the resort is considerably quieter than Koh Tao's main west-coast beaches at Sairee and Chalok Ban Kao. Staff handle longtail transfers and snorkelling equipment rental, and can arrange pickup for dive day trips to sites including Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock. The guest profile is independent travellers and backpackers who specifically seek out the isolation and snorkelling quality; families with manageable children and budget divers make up the remainder.
