Chiang Mai Weather & Climate Guide 2025
Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai is Thailand's cultural capital in the north, a city of ancient temples, night markets, and misty mountains. Once the heart of the Lanna Kingdom, it blends centuries of history with a thriving modern scene of cafes, art galleries, and wellness retreats.
Best Time to Visit
Best Months
November to February
The cool dry season brings clear skies, comfortable temperatures of 15-28°C, lush post-monsoon greenery, and the city's best festivals (Loy Krathong/Yi Peng in November, Chiang Mai Flower Festival in February). Ideal for trekking, temple visits, and outdoor activities.
Months to Avoid
February to March
The burning season (Feb-April) sees farmers burning fields and forests across northern Thailand and Myanmar, creating heavy smoke haze that can push air quality to hazardous levels. PM2.5 readings regularly exceed 200+ in March. Temperatures also rise sharply, reaching 38-40°C in April.
Climate Overview
Chiang Mai has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons: a cool dry season (November-February) with temperatures of 15-28°C, a hot season (March-May) reaching 38-40°C with severe air pollution from agricultural burning, and a monsoon rainy season (June-October) with afternoon showers but generally comfortable temperatures of 24-32°C. Altitude within the province varies from 300m in the city to 2,565m at Doi Inthanon, creating significantly cooler conditions in the mountains year-round.
