Pratunam Market

Pratunam Market is one of Bangkok's largest clothing and textile wholesale districts, centred on the intersection of Petchaburi Road and Ratchathewi district, accessible by the Ratchathewi BTS station or via canal boat to the Pratunam pier. The name means 'water gate' and refers to the floodgate that once controlled water flow through the canal network here. The market itself is a labyrinth of thousands of stalls spread across covered passages, street-level arcades, and the adjoining Platinum Fashion Mall — a large air-conditioned mall directly connected to the open-air market that concentrates women's clothing, accessories, and formal wear across multiple floors. Wholesale buyers from across Southeast Asia and the Middle East purchase bulk quantities of inexpensive garments here; minimum orders are typically 3 to 6 pieces per style, and prices per item can be as low as 30–60 baht for basic clothing. Retail visitors pay more than wholesale buyers but still find prices significantly lower than tourist-facing malls. The surrounding streets are equally valuable for street food: Petchaburi Road between the market and Asoke intersection has one of Bangkok's highest concentrations of street food stalls selling khao man gai (poached chicken rice), boat noodles, pad kra pao, fresh-cut fruit, and roast pork rice. The Pratunam area transitions into the adjacent Pantip Plaza — Bangkok's largest electronics and computer accessories market — a 10-minute walk north, making the area useful for combining clothing and electronics shopping in a single neighbourhood visit.
