Tanzania Family Travel Guide 2025
Everything families need to know for a successful trip to Tanzania with kids.
Tanzania is East Africa's premier safari destination, home to the legendary Serengeti plains, Africa's highest peak Mount Kilimanjaro, and the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. Experience the Great Migration, explore ancient Stone Town, and discover incredible wildlife diversity.
Top Family Activities
The best experiences for families in Tanzania.
Jozani Forest Monkey Walk
Guided boardwalk trail through Zanzibar's forest to see Zanzibar's famous red colobus monkeys up close. The short walk and guaranteed monkey sightings make this ideal for young children.
Prison Island Tortoise Feeding
Boat trip to Changuu Island to hand-feed giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 150 years old. Children love the gentle giants. Snorkeling possible for older children in crystal-clear waters.
Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive
The world's most wildlife-dense area guarantees Big Five sightings in a compact space. Shorter drives needed than in Serengeti, making it ideal for younger safari-goers with limited attention spans.
Zanzibar Beach Day
Nungwi and Kendwa beaches have calm, shallow waters without tidal variation, making them perfectly safe for toddlers and young children. Rock pools at Kendwa at low tide are endlessly fascinating.
Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour
Interactive tour with tasting and smelling stations for cloves, vanilla, lemongrass, and coconut. Guides demonstrate creative uses of plants including how a lime can clean your nails. Great educational fun.
Tarangire National Park Safari
Famous for its enormous elephant herds - some of Africa's largest tuskers. Hundreds of elephants together with giant baobab trees create an unforgettable scene that children remember for life.
Kilimanjaro Base Camp Walk
Easy guided walk through Kilimanjaro's lower rainforest zone to Mandara Hut at 2,700m. No permit needed for the first section. Enormous trees, colobus monkeys, and stunning views reward the effort.

Zanzibar Pizza at Forodhani Night Market is a universally loved family experience - children enjoy watching it being made and eating the unusual filled flatbread.
Safari lodges serve early children's dinners (around 6PM) separately from adult dining - take advantage of this for younger children.
Fresh fruit, mandazi doughnuts, and freshly squeezed juice are abundant and cheap at markets - great for healthy snack breaks.
Avoid raw salads and unpeeled fruit at budget restaurants to prevent stomach upsets in young children. Opt for cooked vegetables and peeled fruits.
Family Travel Tips
Make traveling with kids easier.
Children under 5 may not be permitted on some safari vehicles for safety reasons - check lodge policies before booking.
Pack malaria prophylaxis for all family members prescribed by a doctor. Mosquito repellent with DEET 30% and long sleeves at dusk are essential.
Bring a portable first aid kit with oral rehydration salts, antiseptic cream, antihistamine, and children's pain medication.
Private safari vehicles allow flexibility for toilet stops, naps in the vehicle, and adjusted pacing that makes the experience far better for families.
Zanzibar in July-August and December-January is peak family season. Book accommodation 6+ months ahead for these periods.
