Arusha is Tanzania's northern safari capital and a vibrant gateway city perched on the lower slopes of Mount Meru. Sitting at roughly 1,400 metres above sea level, the region blends bustling urban energy with dramatic highland scenery and world-class wildlife destinations on its doorstep.

The Arusha region has been home to human settlement for thousands of years, evidenced by the extraordinary palaeontological discoveries at Olduvai Gorge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where Louis and Mary Leakey found some of humanity's oldest ancestors in the 1950s and 1960s. The region was dominated for centuries by the Maasai and Meru peoples before German colonial occupation in the late 19th century. Arusha became an important German East Africa administrative centre, then passed to British rule after World War I as part of Tanganyika. Independence came in 1961 under Julius Nyerere, and the landmark Arusha Declaration of 1967 established Tanzania's socialist and self-reliance philosophy. Today the city hosts major international institutions and serves as a diplomatic hub for East Africa.
