On 5 February 1916, the poet Hugo Ball and his partner Emmy Hennings opened the Cabaret Voltaire in a former tavern at Spiegelgasse 1. Artists, many of them refugees from the First World War, gathered there, including Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp, Marcel Janco and Richard Huelsenbeck. They created the Dada movement, defined by nonsense poetry, collage, abstract art and satire. Vladimir Lenin lived across the street at Spiegelgasse 14.

The cabaret where Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings launched the Dada movement in 1916, now an art venue.

The Cabaret closed after months but the name endured, and in 2004 the building was reopened as a cultural venue after an artist occupation saved it from other uses. Today it hosts exhibitions, readings and a small bar.
