Zürich's 870-metre house mountain, reached by direct S-Bahn train, with a viewing tower at Uto Kulm looking over the city, lake and Alps.
The Uetliberg is the ridge that closes Zürich's western horizon, and the S10 train from the main station reaches its summit station in about 20 minutes. From there a broad, well-signed path climbs through beech woods to Uto Kulm, where a hotel-restaurant and a metal observation tower give a sweeping view across the city, Lake Zürich and, on clear days, the Alps from the Säntis to the Bernese Oberland. Several walking trails start at the top: a 2 km ridge walk toward Felsenegg, the Planetenweg model solar-system trail, and routes down toward Zürich Triemli. In winter the hill rises above the low fog, and sledging paths open. On busy summer weekends the summit gets crowded; early mornings and weekday evenings are calmer. Footwear should be sturdy, since forest paths can be muddy. Food at the top is classic Swiss: rösti, sausages and cakes.
