A free university botanical garden with about 8,000 plant species in a hillside park near Zürichhorn, including large tropical greenhouses.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Zürich, open to the public free of charge, occupies a wooded slope above the lake in the Riesbach district. The collection, about 8,000 species, includes alpine plants, Swiss flora, a Japanese-style pond, medicinal and useful plants, and three large greenhouses holding palms, orchids, succulents and carnivorous plants. The garden was founded in 1833 and moved to its present site in 1977. Winter visitors enjoy the warmth of the tropical house; spring and early summer show the best outdoor colour. A visit lasts about one to two hours. Benches and lawns make it a calm break from the city. The garden's research mission means some areas are closed for work; labels explain the plants.
