Zürich is Switzerland's largest city and the capital of the canton of Zürich, set on the northern tip of Lake Zürich where the Limmat river leaves the lake, with the Alps visible on clear days. It combines a medieval old town, world-class museums, lakeside swimming, and the luxury shopping of Bahnhofstrasse with famously punctual public transport and very high prices.
Zürich has a temperate, oceanic-continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and often grey (January highs around 3°C, lows around -2°C) with occasional snow, while summers are warm and fairly humid (July highs around 25°C) with the lake reaching about 22-24°C for swimming. Rainfall is spread through the year and peaks in late spring and summer thunderstorms, with roughly 1,100 mm annually. Autumn fog (Hochnebel) can sit over the city while the hills above are sunny.
