The pedestrian medieval quarter east of the Limmat, with narrow cobbled lanes, guild houses, boutiques, cafés and a lively evening scene.
The Niederdorf is Zürich's best-preserved medieval quarter, a maze of pedestrian lanes between the Limmat and the Zürichberg slope. Niederdorfstrasse, Spiegelgasse and Rindermarkt hold painted facades, guild houses, bookshops, bakeries, small museums and restaurants serving Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, fondue and rösti. It is also the old town's nightlife centre, with bars and clubs open late. Daytime is calm, with antique shops and small cafés; evenings are busier. The area includes the Cabaret Voltaire, birthplace of Dada, and the former home of Lenin on Spiegelgasse 14. The quarter is compact and can be walked in under two hours.
