Monte Rosa Hotel

The Monte Rosa Hotel occupies a central spot on Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt, a short walk from the train station and the lift stations serving the Matterhorn glacier and Gornergrat railways. Opened in 1855, it is the village's oldest hotel and a landmark of Alpine mountaineering history, having hosted Edward Whymper and his climbing party before the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865; period photographs and memorabilia throughout the public areas recall this heritage. The building has been carefully restored to combine Victorian-era architecture, ornate ceilings and a grand staircase, with updated guest comforts. Rooms range from cosy doubles to larger suites, decorated in a refined alpine style with wood accents and antique-inspired furnishings. The restaurant serves classic Swiss and international dishes, complemented by a wood-panelled bar and lounge that are popular gathering spots for an evening drink. There is no spa or pool, but the hotel offers a sun terrace with mountain views, ski storage, and a concierge team well placed to arrange mountain excursions given the hotel's century and a half of alpine guiding history. The atmosphere suits travellers seeking a historic, intimate base over a large resort-style property. The grand staircase and original ceiling mouldings remain centrepieces of the lobby, and several rooms retain tall, shuttered windows from the original 19th-century structure, giving the property a distinctly different character from Zermatt's newer hotels.
