Chez Vrony

Chez Vrony is a mountain restaurant located in the Findeln hamlet above Zermatt at around 2,000 metres altitude, reachable on skis in winter via the Findeln piste or on foot in summer via a 45-minute uphill walk or a combination of Sunnegga express funicular and short hike. The restaurant is renowned across the Alps for combining genuine gourmet quality with the informality of a mountain hut — an unusual combination that has made it one of the most sought-after lunch reservations in the Swiss Alps. The Julen family, who have run Chez Vrony for generations, operate a solar-powered facility and raise their own lamb, pigs, and cattle on slopes below the Matterhorn, which rises directly above the terrace. The lamb, slaughtered on the family's own farm, is the kitchen's calling card: it appears as grilled cutlets, in stews, and as cold cuts on platters. Rösti is prepared in multiple variations and represents the kitchen's Swiss Alpine backbone. The terrace with its unobstructed Matterhorn view is one of the most photographed in Switzerland and on clear days provides a dining experience — the Matterhorn at eye-level over a plate of fresh lamb — that is difficult to replicate anywhere else. In summer, hikers combine a morning walk from Zermatt with lunch on the terrace. Reservations are strongly recommended in both winter and summer seasons.
